Two people hospitalized after helicopter crashes near Nelson

Two people were hospitalized after a helicopter crashed in the Nelson area on Feb. 13.

The crash occurred in the morning near Mount Kubin, which is approximately 15 kilometres northwest of Nelson, according to a statement from the Royal Canadian Air Force.

RCAF said there was low cloud and reduced visibility at the crash site.

Nelson Search and Rescue and a local tour operator transported the helicopter’s occupants to a lower elevation. One patient was taken to a Kelowna hospital by a CH-149 Cormorant belonging to RCAF’s 19 Wing Comox, while the other was transported to a local hospital.

“One of the biggest challenges was the weather and cloud cover around the crash site,” said RCAF Capt. Matt Welsh in a statement. “Thanks to the exceptional co-ordination between air and ground crews, the patients were safely brought to us so we could complete the evacuation.”

It’s not clear how the crash happened, which company was operated the helicopter, or what the status of the victims is. An RCMP spokesperson declined the comment, while the Transportation Safety Board of Canada did not immediately respond to a request sent Feb. 16.
