McDavid, MacKinnon lead Canadian men to 5-1 Olympic win over Switzerland

Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon each had a goal and an assist, as Canada continued its chase for gold at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games with a 5-1 win Friday over Switzerland.

Thomas Harley, Macklin Celebrini and captain Sidney Crosby also scored for Canada, which moved to 2-0 in Group A preliminary action at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. Cale Makar added two assists for the winners, with Logan Thompson making 24 saves in goal.

Pius Suter scored the lone goal for the Swiss, with Akira Schmid taking the netminding loss, stopping 34 shots.

McDavid opened the scoring on the power play 5:45 into the first period. He took a cross-ice feed from MacKinnon and beat Schmid for his first goal of the tourney.

Harley upped the lead to 2-0 at 10:54, moving into the slot and converting a pass from McDavid.

Switzerland cut the lead in half at 12:42 with their own power-play tally. A shot from Sven Andrighetto hit Thompson, the the crossbard before Suter swatted home the rebound to the delight of the singing, chanting Swiss fans.

The goal ended a long Team Canada shutout streak that dated back to the 2014 Games in Sochi. Carey Price put up a pair of shutouts to finish that tourney, with Jordan Binnington opening the current games with a shutout of his own against Czechia.

Shots after one period favoured Canada, 13-10.

In the middle period, Celebrini scored his second of the tourney at 4:14 to up the lead to 3-1. The B.C. teenager took a nice backhand feed from MacKinnon and fired a shot past Schmid to restore Canada’s two-goal margin. Canada put together a line of McDavid, MacKinnon and Celebrini that featured three of the NHL’s top-four scorers for the 2025-26 season.

Switzerland had a great chance to draw closer with 12 minutes to play in the period, but Nico Hischier’s shorthanded breakaway was foiled by Thompson. The Canadian goalie also made a nice save off Philipp Kurashev on a 2-on-1 with 44 seconds left.

Canada outshot the Swiss 14-6 in the middle frame, holding a 27-16 margin after 40 minutes.

Crosby tipped home a terrific pass from Mitch Marner at 7:28 of the final period to make it 4-1 for Canada.

After Celebrini caused a turnover in the Swiss zone, MacKinnon knocked home a McDavid rebound to give Canada a 5-1 lead at 13:03. It was the second goal of the tourney for MacKinnon. McDavid has six points in Canada’s first two outings.

Canada resumes action Sunday (7:40 a.m. PST) against France.

NOTES: The head-to-head history between the Canadians and Swiss goes back to 1924, with Canada winning 10 of the 11 games. In the first game, Harry Watson scored 13 goals to lead Canada to a 33-0 win… Seth Jarvis and Travis Sanheim made make their Olympic debuts Friday, with Josh Morrissey out after leaving Canada’s opening game with an injury. Brad Marchand sat in favour of Jarvis… Switzerland’s Kevin Fiala was taken off on a stretcher late in the third period after an awkward collision with Canada’s Tom Wilson.
