BREAKING: 10 dead, including suspect, after school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.

UPDATE, 6:11 p.m. Pacific:

Ten people are dead, including the suspect, after a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, in northeastern B.C. Tuesday (Feb. 10).

B.C. RCMP cancelled the emergency alert incident at 5:45 p.m., hours after it was first issued. Police said there are not believed to be any suspects at large or an ongoing threat to the public.

In total, 10 people are dead, including the suspected shooter, two have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries and another 25 are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries.

Victims were found at the high school and at a home in Tumbler Ridge.

RCMP North District Commander Supt. Ken Floyd said Tuesday’s fatal shooting was a “rapidly evolving and dynamic situation.”

“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community.”

He said at this stage police believe they have been able to identify the suspect, but will not be releasing that information yet “until we’re assured that we’ve connected with the appropriate people and identified things.”

The suspect, Floyd said, is the same suspect that was described in the emergency alert that was sent out in the afternoon.

Floyd also would not divulge information on the victims at either location.

“We will have answers to that in the coming days to be able to provide everyone who’s got questions about the nature of the injuries, the nature of the persons involved, and what was done at the scene and after the scene,” he told media during a press conference Tuesday evening.

Tumbler Ridge RCMP received a report at 1:20 p.m. of an active shooter at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

Officers searched the school and found an individual believed to be the shooter dead “with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.” Six others were found dead inside the school.

Two victims were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported to hospital. Twenty-five others were injured.

Floyd said all remaining staff and students – about 100 people – were safely evacuated. He added police are working with the school district to support a coordinated reunication process for families.

Police then identified a secondary location where two additional victims were found dead in a home.

Floyd said police believe the residence is connected to the school shooting, but investigators are “not in a position to provide that definitively right now at this time, and what that connection may or may not be.”

Officers are searching other homes and properties to determine whether anyone else may be injured or linked to Tuesday’s deadly shooting.

“We’re still triaging other victims, and I don’t have updates on whether that number could rise,” Floyd said. “The scene was very dramatic, and there were multiple victims that are still being cared for.”

Asked what supports there will be for the Tumbler Ridge community, Floyd acknowledged how the northern portion of the province is “a close community oriented group of B.C. citizens.”

“We have multiple layers of support coming for our students, for our teachers, for our community of Tumbler Ridge, for our front line and front first responders that were part of this unfolding event and are going to be working through that in the days and years to come,” he said.

Floyd said he’s let the local RCMP commander and politicians know that he will be there for support.

“At the end of the day, every citizen and every person in Tumbler Ridge, including our first responders, are going home to their families to try and explain this, and sometimes there’s just not a way to explain this.”

Tumbler Ridge, as of the 2021 census, has a population of about 2,400 people.

There are two schools in the municipality: Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School. The secondary school, which is where the shooting happened, is home to about 160 students from grades 7 to 12.

The Peace River South school district says the two schools will be closed for the remainder of the week.

Neufeld said he does understand “a few folks are out looking for loved ones, and again, please, please go back to your homes.”

Asked if he could communicate the level of emotion the community must be feeling, Neufeld said “no, no I cannot.” Neufeld lives 45 minutes away from the area, but says he is very familiar with the area having worked and recreated there for over 30 years.

Neufeld said he found out about the active shooting incident after a phone call from his constituency office.

“It was a citizen that had phoned into my office to notify me of what was happening,” Neufeld said. He wouldn’t share any further details of what was told to him in fear of jeopardizing the investigation or the safety of others.

The Peace River South MLA has been in “continuous” contact with the Tumbler Ridge mayor and others in the community. He said “a very large amount” of resources have been sent to the community, specifically RCMP and ambulance.

Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger posted to social around 3:30 p.m. about the “extremely concerning situation unfolding in Tumbler Ridge.”

“All our thoughts are with the people in Tumbler Ridge,” Krieger said.

She said she’s spoken with the mayor and Neufeld, and her ministry is offering the RCMP “any additional assistance they need.”

The last post from the Peace River South school district was at 2:50 p.m local time (Tumbler Ridge is in Mountain time) to say the district is aware of a lockdown and secure-and-hold at both the high school and elementary school in Tumbler Ridge. It is not known if the lockdown has yet been lifted as of 6 p.m.
