Residents are invited to adopt a butterfly and help protect local waterways, in a fundraiser organized by the Alouette River Management Society (ARMS).
This unique fundraiser invites local residents to adopt painted lady butterflies and witness one of nature’s most incredible transformations, from caterpillar to butterfly, right at home. Beyond the magic of watching the butterflies emerge, every adoption directly supports ARMS’ work in environmental restoration, hands-on education, and salmon habitat enhancement in the Alouette Watershed.
In this fundraiser, caterpillars are adopted at just a few days old and are monitored as they transition through their life stages into a butterfly. They are then released to complete their life cycle in the wild, in a fun and educational project designed for families, supporting a local environmental charity.
It is first-come-first-served, so ARMS recommends those who want to participate to reserve their butterfly adoption through an online booking form at alouetteriver.org
The adopt-a-butterfly kit costs $30, and this includes a live caterpillar, caterpillar food, and instructions about each stage of its life. There is a butterfly terrarium for an additional $10. Pick-up is at the Rivers Heritage Centre (24959 Alouette Rd.).
This initiative combines education, conservation, and community engagement, giving residents of all ages a way to connect with nature while making a real impact on their local environment, said ARMS.
