Maple Ridge invites businesses to learn about curside patios

The City of Maple Ridge is making it easier for downtown businesses to install curbside patios this year.

The city is inviting businesses to take advantage of the 2026 Seasonal Curbside Patio Program ahead of the spring season with open applications, expanded eligibility requirements, and a Feb. 10 patio showcase event at Haney Builders.

The program allows eligible businesses to extend their dining, retail, and customer service areas onto city-owned sidewalks and curbside parking spots. Several businesses on 224th Street have installed seating in parking spaces out front.

The city says the patios activate streetscapes, attract walk-in customers, and create vibrant, people-friendly commercial areas across the community.

Some patio types are permitted to operate April 1 to Oct. 31, and are required to be dismantled over the winter. Others can operate year-round. Businesses can learn more and check their eligibility at MapleRidge.ca/PatioProgram.

“Seasonal curbside patios have become an important way for local businesses to connect with customers and bring vibrancy to our streets,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “With expanded eligibility for many patio types in 2026, we’re making it more accessible than ever for businesses to participate and take advantage of this great opportunity.”

Businesses are invited to register in advance for a free Patio Program Showcase Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Haney Builders’ Supplies. At the free showcase, businesses can sample patio setups and get inspired for their own spaces. Those attending can also learn how the city’s patio program works, and connect with patio builders.

Based on feedback from the 2025 operating season, the city introduced several updates to improve the program, including expanded business eligibility, reduced insurance requirements, updated design guidelines to provide greater flexibility and clarity.

Patios located on private property, within an existing building envelope, or behind the property line are not covered by this program.

“Whether it’s simple storefront seating to full sidewalk experiences, many different types of businesses can qualify to open a patio,” said Jeff Baker, business retention and expansion advisor at the city. “We’re encouraging businesses to reach out to us or attend our Patio Showcase event to get their questions answered and see how we can help bring their vision to life.”
