Matthews nets shootout winner as Toronto Maple Leafs edge Canucks 3-2

Auston Matthews scored the winning goal in a shootout, lifting the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Saturday at Rogers Arena.

Nicolas Roy and Max Domi tallied for the Leafs (25-21-9) in regulation, with Joseph Woll earning the goaltending win, making 28 saves.

Jonathan Lekkerimäki and Tom Willander scored for the Canucks (18-31-6), who got a strong game from goalie Nikita Tolopilo, who stopped 39 shots.

The teams were scoreless in the first period, each managing seven shots on goal.

“Go Leafs, go” chants were audible several times from the many Leafs fans in attendance.

In the second, Lekkerimäki opened the scoring at 1:55 after a failed clearing attempt by the Leafs. Lekkerimäki took a feed from Liam Ohgren in the slot and beat Woll for his second goal of the season.

Seven minutes into the period, the Canucks looked to have taken a 2-0 lead through centre Elias Pettersson, but the goal was called back after the Leafs successfully challenged that Conor Garland committed goalie interference.

Toronto then evened things up at 13:34, after Robertson made some nice moves along the board and found Roy in the slot, who beat Tolopilo for his fifth of the season.

Just 71 seconds later, Vancouver regained the lead when Willander joined the rush and converted a nice cross-ice pass from Evander Kane and beat Woll for his fourth goal of the year, and second in three games.

Domi had the only goal of the third, scoring off a faceoff scramble at 2:32. Domi’s shot hit Tolopilo and somehow went up over his back and in. Domi now has nine goals on the year and has points in five straight games.

Shots after three periods favoured Toronto, 36-26.

In three-on-three overtime, the teams exchanged several good chances. With 1:14 to play, Matthews was hauled down by Conor Garland and awarded a penalty shot. He attempted a deke but was foiled by Tolopilo.

In the shootout, Jake DeBrusk opened for Vancouver with a shot that hit the crossbar and goalpost but stayed out. Nylander then beat Tolopilo with a deke and a top shelf backhand. Woll then stopped Pettersson, setting up the winner from Matthews. He also used a deke and slotted home a backhand.

The Canucks visit the Utah Mammoth on Monday (6:30 p.m.).
