B.C.’s Macklin Celebrini has 4 points as visiting Sharks thump Canucks 5-2

B.C. product Macklin Celebrini had a goal and three assists, leading the visiting San Jose Sharks to a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Tuesday at Rogers Arena.

Adam Gaudette, Tyler Toffoli, Will Smith and John Klingberg also scored for the Sharks (27-21-3), with Yaroslav Askarov earning the win in goal, making 23 saves.

Tom Williander and Filip Hronek tallied for the Canucks (17-31-5). Vancouver goalie Kevin Lankinen gave up three early markers and was replaced in the first period by Nikita Tolopilo, who stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

Vancouver opened the scoring just 1:15 into the contest, with Willander taking a feed from centre Elias Pettersson and wristing a shot past Askarov for his fifth goal of the season.

The Sharks roared back with three goals in just over four minutes.

B.C. product Celebrini pulled the Sharks even at 1:51, one-timing a nice Will Smith backhand feed from the top of the slot past Lankinen. Celebrini has 27 goals on the year.

Former Canuck Gaudette gave San Jose a 2-1 lead at 4:43, finishing a nice three-way passing play with Celebrini and William Eklund for his 11th goal of the season. Another ex-Canuck, Toffoli, upped the lead to 3-1 at 5:55, snapping home a pass into the slot from Alexander Wennberg for goal No. 15 on the year.

Lankinen was then pulled, having given up three goals on six shots inside of six minutes. Tolopilo finished the period, stopping all nine shots he saw.

Shots on goal after one period favoured the Sharks, 15-8.

In the second period, Smith boosted the Sharks’ lead to 4-1 on the power play, firing a close-in shot past the blocker of Tolopilo at 9:07. Smith now has 15 goals on the year, and Celebrini picked up his 50th assist of the season on the play.

Late in the period, the Canucks had a two-man advantage but could not beat Askarov despite several good chances.

With 1:18 to go in the period, Vancouver’s Evander Kane decisioned San Jose’s Timothy Liljegren in a brief scrap. It was the first NHL fight for Liljegren.

Klingberg upped the San Jose lead to 5-1 on a power-play just 28 seconds into the final period, wristing a shot past Tolopilo for his 10th goal of the year.

From the right point, Hronek one-timed a Pettersson power-play pass past Askarov at 9:15 to pull the Canucks within three at 5-2. Hronek now has five goals on the year.

The Canucks host the Anaheim Ducks Thursday (7 p.m.).

NOTES: Jonathan Lekkerimäki replaced an injured Brock Boeser (concussion) in the Vancouver lineup… San Jose’s Kiefer Sherwood, recently acquired from the Canucks, missed the game with an undisclosed injury… Vancouver’s Zeev Buium was placed on injured reserve after suffering a facial fracture, while goalie Thatcher Demko will have hip surgery and miss the rest of the season… The Sharks were 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Canucks went 1-for-4.
