Watch for black ice as fog advisory continues for B.C.’s Lower Mainland

Foggy conditions persist on Vancouver Island from Victoria to near Port Alberni and across the Sunshine Coast with another pocket on the Lower Mainland to start Thursday (Jan. 22).

A ridge of high pressure off the coast is trapping moisture near the surface, creating areas of dense fog, according to Environment Canada

The coastal ridge is forecast to weaken Thursday with an approaching weather system, and visibility should improve in some areas by afternoon. Fog patches may linger through the night before outflow winds dissipate the fog early Friday.

Drivers should expect slippery and icy conditions in low-lying areas where the combination of fog patches and below-freezing temperatures will allow black ice to form, and produce suddenly reduced visibility.

Across Greater Victoria, Environment Canada predicts lows of 0 C Thursday night and -2 C overnight Friday, back to 0 C Saturday night and -2 C Sunday before warming up to rain and 2 C Monday (Jan. 26).
