‘N’ driver arrested for travelling 120 km/h on Kelowna’s Glenmore Road

Driver arrested for going 70 km/h over speed limit in Kelowna

A vehicle caught travelling 120 km/h in a 50 km/h zone highlighted a successful day for the Kelowna RCMP’s Municipal Traffic Unit.

Someone on Tuesday, Jan. 20, a member of the RCMP observed the vehicle “operating in an extremely dangerous manner”, travelling approximately 70 km/h over the speed limit on Glenmore Road at High Road.

The officer stopped the vehicle and arrested the Class 7 (N) driver for dangerous operation. The driver received tickets for excessive speed and driving without due care. Additionally, they refused a breath test, immediately resulting in a 90‑day roadside driving prohibition and impoundment of the vehicle.

“This kind of driving behaviour puts the driver and anyone else on the road at significant risk,” said Cst. Tyler Hug of the Kelowna RCMP’s Municipal Traffic Unit.

Earlier in the day, RCMP issued 16 violation tickets for use of electronic devices while driving during a distracting driver campaign in a Lakeshore Road school zone.

The 16 drivers each received tickets with a $368 fine and four demerit points.

RCMP conducted the campaign on Lakeshore Road after identifying the location as a “high-priority” area due to a busy crosswalk.

Distracted driving contributes to 37 per cent of all police-reported injury crashes, according to an ICBC report. The company has also seen an increase in crashes and distracted driving and speeding, add the RCMP.

“Our teams will continue to set up traffic enforcement throughout the city to curb dangerous driving habits and will be part of provincial wide campaigns that drivers will see in February and March,” added Hug. “Please slow down and stay off your devices.”
