Duclair nets 2 as New York Islanders trip slumping Canucks 4-3

Anthony Duclair had a pair of goals, lifting the visiting New York Islanders to a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Monday at Rogers Arena.

Ryan Pulock and Tony DeAngelo also scored for the Isles (27-17-5), with Mathew Barzal and Matthew Schaefer adding two assists apiece. Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves for the netminding win.

Max Sasson, Evander Kane and Drew O’Connor scored for the Canucks (16-28-5), who have dropped 11 straight games. Kevin Lankinen stopped 28 of 32 shots in the Vancouver goal.

The Canucks opened the scoring 2:49 into the first when Sasson finished off a nice three-way passing play with fellow fourth-liners Linus Karlsson and Nils Hoglander. Sasson has 10 goals on the year.

The Isles tied it up midway through the period when Duclair snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle past Lankinen.

Kane restored Vancouver’s lead at 2-1 at 14:48, tipping home defenceman Elias Pettersson’s point shot.

Three minutes later, the Islanders thought they had tied things up after rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer beat Lankinen with a nifty deke, but the play was ruled offside.

Shots on goal after 20 minutes favoured the Canucks, 12-9.

In the second period, Duclair scored again, this time on the power play, at 14:34 to even things up at 2-2. Duclair converted a feed from Calum Ritchie for his 11th goal of the year, and seventh in his last seven games.

Pulock gave the Isles their first lead of the game at 15:57, walking in from the point and firing a shot from the slot that beat Lankinen blocker-side. It was Pulock’s second goal of the year.

New York outshot Vancouver 14-12 in the middle frame.

DeAngelo gave the Isles some breathing room 10:15 into the third, knocking home a loose puck to the right of Lankinen for his third goal of the year.

With Lankinen on the bench in favour of an extra attacker, O’Connor tipped in a Filip Hronek point shot to pull Vancouver within 4-3 at 18:09 but they could get no closer. It was O’Connnor’s 11th goal of the season.

The Canucks host the Washington Capitals Wednesday (7 p.m.).

NOTES: Also Monday, the Canucks traded forward Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks, for a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL draft, a second-round pick in 2027 and right-handed defenceman Cole Clayton.
