Maple Ridge hosts Rachel Therrien Latin Jazz Quintet

Internationally acclaimed trumpet player Rachel Therrien and her Latin Jazz Project will be stopping in Maple Ridge as part of a tour of Western Canada.

Her Latin Jazz Project is the result of postgraduate studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, and is also informed by her many musical experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean.

With this ensemble, Therrien offers a festive repertoire featuring original works and Afro-Latin jazz classics. From salsa to danzón and rumba to chachacha, Therrien and her band of virtuosos invite the audience to groove to the lively rhythms of Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, and Haiti, among others.

From Quebec, Therrien is a composer, producer and bandleader who boasts an impressive career. She was a Grammy nominee for Virtual Birdland (2021) with Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and Therrien has also earned three ADISQ nominations (for Mi Hogar (2023), her production work on Noé Lira’s Latiendo la Tierra (2022), and VENA (2021). She had three JUNO nominations for VENA (2021) and The Ostara Project (2022).

Winner of the 2015 TD Grand Prize Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the 2016 Stingray Rising Star Award, she has captivated audiences worldwide with emotionally charged performances and high-caliber improvisations. Therrien recently released her eighth album, Mi Hogar II, an internationally acclaimed project recorded in Montreal, Toronto, and New York City with 25 world-class musicians.

The performance will be at The ACT Arts Centre on Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online at vtix.com
