Maple Ridge city hall can assist flood victims

Last weekend’s atmospheric river brought flooding to Maple Ridge, and city hall is assisting households that suffered losses.

The prolonged storm from Jan. 11 to 12 brought heavy rainfall, elevated river levels, and localized flooding.

The city advises initial cleanup should focus on removing standing water, disposing of items that cannot be safely disinfected, and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting affected surfaces to reduce health risks, including mold. Use caution when re-entering flooded areas, as hidden hazards may still be present.

The city is working with provincial partners at Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR) to determine whether this storm event will be eligible for Provincial Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA). DFA is intended to assist residents with uninsurable losses related to essential repairs and recovery following significant emergency events. Further information on eligibility and application steps will be provided once details are confirmed by the Province.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to:

• Contact their insurance provider

• Report flood-related damage to the City

• Document damage with photos and written records

• Retain receipts related to cleanup and repairs

• Access mental health services, support lines and Canadian Red Cross support programs.

The city is continuing to assess storm-related impacts – primarily to road shoulders and paving, potholes, downed trees, and debris accumulation. Crews are actively completing cleanup and repairs, and this work will continue as conditions allow.

Residents are encouraged to take steps now to reduce risk and prepare for future events.

• Determine flood risks in your area using local floodplain maps

• Clear gutters, drains, and catch basins of debris

• Install sump pumps and backflow prevention where appropriate

• Complete simple, cost-effective home upgrades

• Stay informed about weather forecasts and river levels.

• Review your household emergency plan and supplies

• Make arrangements for pets, farms, and livestock

• Identify friends or family outside flood-prone areas where you could stay if needed

• Pre-register for Emergency Support Services (ESS) using the BC Services Card app to expedite assistance in future emergencies

Sandbags are available for residents living in flood-prone areas. Contact the city operations team at Operations@MapleRidge.ca or 604-463-9581.
