Legion serves up haggis during Burns tribute

An iconic Scottish serving of sheep innards, oatmeal, and spices all cooked inside the animal stomach, will be served in Maple Ridge in a couple weeks.

For some, this historic pudding dish doesn’t sound in the slightest bit appealing, while others love it, in part because it’s rolled out amid pomp and circumstance to celebrate Robbie Burns Night.

Well, such will be the case, when the haggis is piped in and served to all the guests expected for dinner this month at the Royal Canadian Legion in Maple Ridge.

In particular, the haggis will be served up with a roast beef dinner and dessert on Wednesday, Jan. 21 for participating legion members and their guests.

Tickets to the event are $55, and must be purchased from the legion office by 4 p.m. on Jan. 18.

The Burns supper will feature a special welcome, a Selkirk Grace, piping in and ode to the haggis, toast to the lassies and laddies, and a performance by the Dunvegan Dance Academy’s highland dancers.

The dinner is being served at the local legion, located at 12101 224 St. For more information, people can call 604-463-5101.
