A small dog survived on her own for more than two weeks after her owner died over the holidays.
Chenelle is an eight-year-old miniature pincher cross Chihuahua.
RCMP found her while conducting a wellness check at a Vernon home Jan. 3 and found her owner had passed away. Police contacted the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) dog control to take custody of Chenelle.
“When our officer arrived on site, it was clear that the animal needed medical attention, so they contacted the Okanagan Humane Society (OHS) to arrange a care plan,” said Stacey Raftus, RDNO communications officer, adding Chenelle was “clearly malnourished.”
Chenelle was taken to the Kelowna Veterinary Hospital to be checked and is being cared for by a volunteer.
“Sweet Chenelle is safe in OHS foster care after what must have been a confusing time,” the OHS said.
The RDNO thanks OHS for its quick response for the small dog.
“We are thankful that she was found and we were able to get care for her as quickly as we did,” said Raftus.
