LETTER: More lights, crosswalks would prevent deaths

Dear Editor,

Regarding the woman who was killed crossing Lougheed Highway near Laity Street.

If you go past Laity Street, towards 207th, it’s the darkest stretch of the highway at night.

I dread walking down that stretch of Lougheed Highway. There are no street lights at all until you reach close to 207 Street.

If it’s not a lack of proper crosswalks, it’s a total lack of street lighting on that stretch of the highway.

Who is gonna step up on the municipal or federal level and put badly needed street lights on the darkest stretches of Lougheed Highway, so drivers can see pedestrians?

How many more people have to die before some initiative is taken?

If you know that a simple solution involving crosswalks and street lighting will bring down the death toll, what’s the point of passing the buck between the federal and municipal government?

Jurisdiction is irrelevant when people are dying on dangerous stretches of a highway.
