Öhgren nets shootout winner as Canucks take down Seattle Kraken 3-2

Liam Öhgren scored the game-winning goal in a shootout, lifting the visiting Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken Monday in NHL action at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

Linus Karlsson and centre Elias Pettersson scored for the Canucks (16-19-3) in regulation time. Goalie Kevin Lankinen was outstanding, stopping 37 of 39 shots, plus three more in the shootout, to earn the netminding win. Lankinen has stopped all 17 shootout shots he has faced this year.

Jared McCann and Ryan Winterton replied for the Kraken (16-14-7). Joey Daccord took the loss in goal, making 22 saves.

Former Canuck McCann opened the scoring at 8:50 of the first period, ripping a one-timer from the right point off a feed from Vince Dunn on the power play. McCann has six goals on the season, in only 13 games as he has battled injuries.

At 15:17, McCann then engaged in a spirited fight with Vancouver’s Conor Garland.

Three seconds after the bout, Karlsson tied things at 1-1 with his ninth goal of the year, converting a feed from Öhgren and beating Daccord.

With 20 seconds left in the period, Winterton took advantage after Vancouver defencemen Tyler Myers and Elias Pettersson collided to give the Kraken a 2-1 lead. Winterton slotted home a pass from Jacob Melanson, who earned his first career NHL point with the assist.

Seattle outshot Vancouver 14-12 in the period.

In the second, Vancouver centre Pettersson pulled the Canucks even at 2-2 5:23 into the period, taking a pass from Evander Kane and rifling a wrist shot past Daccord from the slot. Pettersson has nine goals on the season.

Vancouver held a 21-20 shots on goal advantage after 40 minutes.

Lankinen held firm as the Kraken carried much of the play through the third period, outshooting Vancouver 16-3, with neither team able to score.

In overtime, Vancouver’s Evander Kane was assessed a tripping penalty, giving the Kraken a 4-on-3 advantage, but they again couldn’t beat Lankinen. Seattle held a 39-24 shots advantage heading into the shootout.

Lankinen stopped Freddy Gaudreau, Eeli Tolvanen and Jordan Eberle in the shootout, setting the stage for Öhgren’s heroics.

The Canucks are back in action Tuesday (7 p.m.) when they host the Philadelphia Flyers at Rogers Arena.

NOTES: Forward Jake DeBrusk was healthy scratch for the first time as a Canuck… Lankinen has stopped 48 of 54 shootout shots in his career… Vancouver’s Aatu Räty won 12 of 17 faceoffs… The Kraken were 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Canucks were 0-for-2.
