Six puppies at the Maple Ridge branch of the BC SPCA are up for adoption.
A litter in Quesnel was transferred to the Maple Ridge branch with the mother going to the BC SPCA branch in Vancouver.
The puppies are a German shepherd and Siberian husky mix. Branch manager Dave Desautels, is expecting the puppies to grow to be a medium to large-sized dog.
He noted the pups are all very sweet, healthy, and doing well.
Desautels expects the puppies will go quickly.
Although, he noted they are a going to be a high energy, working-style dog.
“With the German shepherd background they are going to be workers. With the husky background they are going to be energetic,” he said.
They should get a minimum of two walks a day, morning and evening, and have access to backyard space.
It is not required that you work from home, although it would be a benefit.
They are nine weeks old and they are all available for adoption.
Although the BC SPCA used to recommend that people not give pets as gifts, fearing unwanted animals would end up back at the shelter. They now have research that shows even if an animal is given as a gift, they tend to stay in that home, especially if the pet was anticipated and wanted.
Currently they are accepting local applicants only at this time as they are still waiting for spay and neuter appointments at the Vancouver SPCA Hospital, in addition to vaccine boosters.
Their adopters will need to be able to transport to the upcoming appointments.
Anyone wanting one of the puppies can fill out an application online or visit the shelter in person between 1-4 p.m. everyday. Although an online application only does not give you first pick of pups.
It is first come, first considered for the pups, said Desautels.
“Whoever is at that door has first pick,” he said.
There are other animals at the shelter that staff is hoping they find their forever home during the holidays.
There is a two-year-old pocket bully, a more compact, muscular variety of an American bull dog, named Millie, who came into the shelter as a surrender about a week ago.
Clyde, 3, is a large hound/Labrador mix. Ziggy, 1, is a very shy German shepherd mix.
Cooby, a two-year-old German shepherd, is in foster care at the moment, but he is also looking for a forever home.
There are also three cats available for adoption.
Oreo is six months old, Lulu is two years old, and Rosemary is three years old.
The Maple Ridge branch of the BC SPCA is always looking for donations for their pet food bank, where they provide people who need help with free cat and dog food and kitty litter.
Donations of unopened, unused litter and food will always be accepted.
There is also a front store area that is by donation for people who are looking for dog collars, cat collars, food bowls, cat trees, or other items.
For Christmas there is an angel tree set up in the front foyer of the branch office at 10235 Jackson Rd, Maple Ridge, and staff are hoping community members will take a tag from the tree, purchase the items on the wish list and return their donation under the tree.
All of the items are animal and shelter specific.
