Sherwood’s hat trick powers Canucks to 4-1 victory over Islanders

Kiefer Sherwood had a hat trick, leading the visiting Vancouver Canucks to a 4-1 win over the New York Islanders in NHL action Friday at UBS Arena.

David Kampf had the other goal for the Canucks (14-17-3) who are now 3-0 since trading captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. Thatcher Demko was solid in goal for Vancouver, stopping 20 of 21 shots.

Anders Lee had the lone goal for the Isles (19-13-3), with Ilya Sorokin absorbing the loss in net, making 26 saves.

The Canucks stormed to a 3-0 lead after one period. Kampf opened the scoring with his first of the season at 8:57, grabbing a loose puck to the left of Sorokin and slotting it home.

Sherwood made it 2-0 at 10:35, stealing the puck from Isles rookie Matthew Schaefer and beating Sorokin from the right faceoff circle. He added his second of the game five minutes later on the power play, converting a nice feed in the slot from Filip Hronek.

Vancouver held a 9-8 shots-on-goal advantage after 20 minutes.

In the middle frame, Vancouver outshot the Isles 10-6 but neither team was able to find the net.

Islanders coach Patrick Roy pulled Sorokin in favour of an extra attacker with six minutes left in the third period and with 5:05 to play, Calum Ritchie made a neat cross-crease pass to Isles captain Lee, who beat Demko to make it 3-1. Lee now has nine goals on the season.

Sherwood completed his hat trick into the empty net at 18:37. He now has 16 goals for the year.

Vancouver visits the Boston Bruins Saturday (4 p.m.).

NOTES: Demko had 23 saves in a Tuesday shutout versus the New York Rangers and extended his streak of not allowing a goal to 150 minutes and 53 seconds before Lee’s marker… Coming into the game, Demko’s road record in December was 8-0-2, with a .923 save percentage… It was the second hat trick of the year for Sherwood and his eighth career multi-goal game (sixth with the Canucks)… The Canucks were 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Isles were 0-for-4.
