Thatcher Demko made 23 saves for his 10th career shutout, leading the visiting Vancouver Canucks to a 3-0 win over the New York Rangers Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
Evander Kane, Liam Ohgren and Conor Garland scored for the Canucks (13-17-3), who have won the first two games on a five-game road trip. Jonathan Quick stopped 14 of 16 shots and took the loss in goal for the Rangers (16-15-4). New York is a dismal 4-10-3 on home ice.
Kane opened the scoring just 1:46 into the game, taking a feed from Brock Boeser on the right side and taking advantage of an opening when Rangers defenceman Matthew Robertson collided with a linesman. Kane then moved across the front of the goal and outwaited Quick to deposit the puck in the empty net. Kane now has six goals on the season.
Shots on goal after 20 minutes favoured the Rangers, 7-3.
In the second period, Ohgren, acquired from Minnesota last week as part a blockbuster trade that sent Canucks captain Quinn Hughes to the Wild, tallied his first of the year. The left-handed Ohgren moved down the right side and fired a shot from the faceoff circle that found its away through Quick and dribbled in.

Vancouver scored its first two goals on only five shots and the Rangers held a 14-9 shots margin after two periods.
With five minutes remaining in the third period, the Rangers went on the power play after Vancouver’s Marco Rossi was assessed a hooking minor. They also pulled Quick for an extra attacker, but Garland scored shorthanded, with his 185-foot backhander into the empty net making it 3-0.
The Canucks continue their road swing Friday, when they visit the New York York Islanders (4 p.m.).
NOTES: Rangers forward Mike Zibanejad returned after sitting out one game as a healthy scratch, punishment for missing a team meeting… Vancouver centre Elias Pettersson missed another game due to an upper-body injury. He has been out since Dec. 5… The Rangers were 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Canucks failed to score on their three chances with the man advantage.
