Refugee from Bangladesh, 9, killed by van a month after arriving in B.C.

The family of a 9-year-old girl, who died in the hospital after being struck by a “large cube van” on December 5 in Surrey, has created an online fundraiser to help cover funeral costs and other expenses.

Police responded to a call around 2:35 p.m. of a pedestrian struck in the 13400-block of 81 Avenue.

Paramedics transported the child to the hospital. On Sunday, police reported that the child had died as a result of injuries.

Shomima had moved to Canada from Bangladesh just a month before her death with her family. The family was hoping to “rebuild their lives after years of hardship as Rohingya Muslims from Burma.”

The fundraiser, created by Shomima’s cousin, Ajis Nasir, is to help support his uncle and family. With all funds going directly to the family to “cover funeral costs and provide support with other immediate expenses,” the GoFundMe noted.

The driver of the vehicle is co-operating with police, and they do not believe impairment was a factor. The cause of the incident remains under investigation by Surrey Police.
