The Pitt Meadows Marauders senior girls basketball team took gold at the prestigious Tsumura Basketball Invitational Tournament on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
The Pitt girls finished a great tournament with a 58-42 win over the Valleyview Vikes of Kamloops in the championship game of the Select 16 bracket.
The Marauders opened the final with a great first quarter that included an 11-point run.
Select 16 MVP Jocelyn Boyes led Pitt Meadows with 18 points, while Evelyn Perler added 14 and earned Player of the Game honours. Kaydence McCaw chipped in 11, giving the Marauders three players in double figures.
Pitt Meadows opened the tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 10, with a 52-49 win over Pacific Academy, and the next day got past the Notre Dame Jugglers 60-53. The team’s bench boss explained those two nailbiters got his team playing championship ball.
“I’m just really proud of how the group stayed with it and found ways to win, especially early in the tournament,” said Pitt Meadows head coach Jason Boyes. “Those first couple of games were tight, and the kids didn’t panic.”
Boyes topped the Marauders with 16 point against Notre Dame, while Perler added 14, including four key three-pointers, and Camilla Rocca contributed 12.
Friday they beat the Centennial Centaurs of Coquitlam 64-47, after starting the game with a 17-4 lead, and up 20 at the half. Boyes scored 17 in that game, and McCaw had 14.
“It was about learning how to manage the game,” Boyes said. “Not getting too high, not getting too low. Over the four days, they got better at reading what the moment called for — when to slow it down and when to push the pace.”
