Highway 1 closed all day Revelstoke to Golden for avalanche control

For at least the third full-day closure in the last week, Parks Canada has closed the Trans-Canada Highway for avalanche control all of Monday.

According to DriveBC, Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden remains shut throughout Dec. 15, until no sooner than 11 p.m. PST.

The closure commenced as early as 3 a.m. Monday, and leaves no detour available through the Selkirk and Purcell mountains until midnight or early Tuesday morning, Dec. 16.

Parks Canada is using the closure to roll out howitzers in Rogers Pass that displace snowpacks threatening the national transportation corridor, and clear the snow from the highway after it cascades down.

Some 50 centimetres of snow fell in Rogers Pass over the weekend. Avalanche danger there is rated high for Monday, from the alpine all the way down to below the treeline, and “a widespread natural avalanche cycle is expected,” according to Avalanche Canada.

Multiple daylong closures have already occurred along Highway 1 in Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks this December.

Last Wednesday, Dec. 10, the route shut for avalanche control from 11 a.m. until midnight. Then, around 9:20 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, emergency responders were on scene west of Rogers Pass following a collision between two semi-trailers, which closed the corridor for the rest of the day pending investigation.
