One person has died following a head-on collision between two semi-trailers on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Revelstoke, shutting the route to Golden until further notice Friday.
Revelstoke RCMP reported Friday afternoon, Dec. 12, that this “serious motor vehicle incident” between the city and Rogers Pass summoned frontline officers at 9:20 a.m.
One semi driver was declared dead on scene, while the other was transported to hospital in serious condition, police said.
Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden will remain closed until further notice as the collision site undergoes investigation, according to RCMP. Revelstoke officers are working with BC Highway Patrol and RCMP collision analysis and reconstruction specialists.
DriveBC indicates that the closure won’t be updated until at least 9:30 p.m. PST Friday. Since the morning, dozens of westbound semis have been waiting at the summit of Rogers Pass for the highway’s reopening, a DriveBC camera shows.
“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased individual,” BC RCMP’s Cpl. Brett Urano said in a release. “We would like to thank all the first responders who attended and provided care to those involved in the incident.”
Revelstoke RCMP encourages motorists to slow down and “always drive to the conditions,” and asks anyone with dashcam footage or eyewitness accounts of the collision to speak to an investigator.
