Heavy rain alert for Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows

Environment Canada has issued a rain alert for Metro Vancouver, including Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

According to the national weather agency, an atmospheric river will be arriving on the south coast of B.C., bringing with it heavy rain overnight into Wednesday evening.

Around 50 millimetres to 80 mm of rain is expected to fall.

“Warm air with the system will cause freezing levels to rise and snowmelt combined with the rain may result in high streamflows and localized flooding,” said the agency online.

Although the highest rainfall amounts are expected by the Coast Mountains, water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Visibility, noted the agency, will likely be suddenly reduced at times.

Environment Canada is advising people not to drive through flooded roadways.

In addition to local warnings, the agency has also issued two highway alerts.

The most severe alert is for Highway 3, from Hope to Princeton by Allison Pass. The other is for the drive along the Sea to Sky Highway from Squamish to Whistler.

Both alerts are also due to heavy rain.

Drivers are advised that weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
