Langford’s Dominic Fox was on vacation when he received the call to audition for the My Secret Santa film for Netflix, which is currently ranking in the Top 10 movies on Netflix Canada.
Fox, who started his acting career at the age of 11, graduated from the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2024.
This rising local talent is spreading festive cheer this season, making waves both locally and on the big screen as he builds an impressive early career portfolio with his first ever feature film, in which he plays Jimmy, the chief elf.
The story starts with Taylor, a desperate single mom who, after losing her job, resorts to disguising herself as an elderly man to get hired as a local ski resort’s Santa Claus for the holidays. Things become complicated when the resort manager begins to suspect her, and she falls in love with the owner’s handsome son.
When he got the chance to audition for the role, he had no elf costume with him. He recalled borrowing his sister’s onesie and facing the online audition, which ultimately landed him the part alongside a few well known actors.
The movie was filmed primarily in British Columbia, giving Fox a chance to showcase his skills close to home. He told Victoria News that he’s thrilled the movie is doing so well.
Fox was in the film alongside Alexandra Breckenridge from Virgin River, and Ryan Eggold from New Amsterdam. Fox appears as the resort’s chief elf, a supporting role that adds to the movie’s warm holiday charm.
Describing the experience of acting side-by-side with Breckenridge and Eggold, he said, “It was definitely a unique and a memorable experience to act with such a cast.”
He added that the entire crew and cast were helpful along the way, and he came away from the film set with great memories he will carry with him for a lifetime.
Prior to this movie, Fox appeared in the most recent season of the comedy series, The Vince Staples Show (2024) on Netflix. Apart from his Netflix projects, Fox has also appeared in several short films and has worked with the Black Wing Theatre Company.
His artistic abilities go beyond acting— he is also a writer and a musician, and has several more screen projects in the works.
Fox had a message to any aspiring actors in Greater Victoria.
“If you want to achieve something, just trust yourself. Put yourself out there and be yourself,” he said. “The movie scene in Vancouver Island is booming right now and there are many opportunities opening.”
