UBCM asks province to amend legislation to ban hybrid wolf-dogs

The Union of BC Municipalities has endorsed a resolution that calls on the provincial government to “immediately” amend either the Controlled Alien Species Regulation or the Wildlife Act to prohibit the breeding and keeping of wolf-dog hybrids.

Resolution NR76, passed during UBCM’s quarterly meeting on Nov. 13 and Nov. 14, noted that exotic animals and their hybrids are not domesticated and “suffer physically and psychologically when bred, kept, displayed and sold in captivity”, and can pose safety risks to other animals and people.

Hybrid animals are not currently covered by provincial legislation which prohibits the keeping of most wild animals as pets.

The resolution was submitted to UBCM in 2024 as a late resolution, but did not meet the criteria to be admitted for debate as an emergency resolution. In keeping with UBCM policy, the resolution was forwarded to the Area Association for consideration as part of the 2025 resolutions cycle.

A wolf-dog roamed loose in the PQB area for several months in 2023 and 2024, resulting in numerous reports of attacks on domestic pets, including an 18-month-old French Bulldog killed while on leash at the Coombs Country Campground.

It was reportedly shot and killed in April 2024, according to an unconfirmed report by an area resident.
