Goalie John Gibson made 39 saves for his 25th career shutout, leading the visiting Detroit Red Wings to a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Monday at Rogers Arena.
James van Riemsdyk, Andrew Copp, Nate Danielson and Dylan Larkin scored for the Wings (16-11-3). Kevin Lankinen took the goaltending loss for the Canucks (11-16-3), stopping 10 of 13 shots before being relieved by Nikita Tolopilo, who stopped all six shots he saw in the final period.
The Canucks carried the play for much of the first period, but van Riemsdyk managed the only goal at 14:14. The puck came to the veteran forward in front of Lankinen, and he backhanded home his own rebound to make it 1-0.
Shots on goal in the period favoured the Canucks, 11-6.
In the second, the Wings scored a pair of late goals 37 seconds apart to break things open.
Copp took a great pass from Axel Sandin-Pellikka for a tap-in at 15:15, then Danielson deflected a point shot past Lankinen at 15:52.
Shots after 40 minutes were 22-13 in favour of Vancouver. Tolopilo replaced Lankinen to begin the third.
Vancouver’s best chance in the third period came with nine minutes left, when Gibson robbed Aatu Räty. Larkin wrapped things up with an empty-netter with 4:31 to play.
The Canucks host the Buffalo Sabres Thursday (7 p.m.).
