B.C. woman mistakenly calls 911 to order pizza, gets visit from police

A woman mistakenly called 911 while trying to order a pizza in Mission last week.

According to Mission RCMP’s weekly “Community Connection” crime recap, the woman became “rather upset” when the 911 call-taker couldn’t help with her request and informed her that police would stop by to check on her.

“911 is a simple, easy to remember number. In fact, it’s so easy to dial, that from time-to-time, people dial it by mistake,” RCMP said.

The woman calling for pizza wasn’t in need of help and apologized for the mistake after a visit from local police.

Mission RCMP said anyone who dials 911 by mistake will likely receive a visit from police anyway.

“There are many times when someone calls 911 for help, but then gets nervous about the repercussions, or someone else in the house walks in on them, and so they suddenly say they don’t need police, and hang up without providing any further information. It’s not unusual for us to respond to such calls and find that someone is actually in need of help, but was coerced to say otherwise on the phone,” police said.

RCMP needs to attend every misdial or hang-up because of that possibility, in spite of any pleas from callers, police say.
