Ballet Victoria is bringing the holidays to Maple Ridge with their annual performance of ‘The Nutcracker’.
The classic holiday ballet tells the story of a young girl named Clara, who gathers with family and friends around the Christmas tree for a festive night of celebration, when she receives a special gift from her mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer—a toy Nutcracker, which comes to life and takes her on a magical journey.
Before the night is over Clara will travel to the Land of Snow, and the Land of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and is entertained by various international dancers.
The ballet, composed by Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, who also composed Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty, was one of his final ballets before his death in 1893.
It continues to be one of the most enjoyed holiday traditions around the world.
Ballet Victoria, founded in 2002, puts on four yearly productions.
Artistic Director Paul Destrooper and his company of 12 professional dancers have produced close to 100 new works, including 10 full length ballets, and has toured across Canada, the U.S.A., and Mexico.
‘The Nutcracker” is being presented by Arts On Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, and Sunday, Dec. 14, at The ACT Arts Centre, 11944 Haney Place, Maple Ridge.
Tickets range from $42 to $57, plus fees each.
The show runs around 85 minutes, plus a 20 minute intermission.
