Ridge Meadows Flames get two wins, host tribute to coach

The Ridge Meadows Flames got a pair of wins over the weekend.

On Friday night, Nov. 21, they hosted an emotional memorial for their late coach Martin Hak, in front of a Cam Neely Arena that was packed for the occasion. Hak, who was with the Flames for two Stonehouse Cup championship seasons as an assistant coach, died in a car accident on Nov. 9.

The Flames then blasted the Coastal Tsunami team from Gibsons by a score of 5-1.

Jonah Power Smith was the game’s first star, as the second-year forward scored twice, and now has 10 goals and 15 points in 16 games this season. Mattheo Appezzato had a goal and an assist, and was the second star, and Jayden Simpson and team captain Zack Lagrange also scored.

Matthew Candusso stopped 25 of 26 shots in net, and was named the third star.

The veteran backstop then had a shutout on Sunday night at Langley’s George Preston Arena, as he was perfect on 37 shots by the Trappers, and led the Flames to a 3-0 win. It was his second shutout of the season.

Lagrange, Sam Allen and Carter Nailen all scored for the Flames.

With the wins, the Flames improve their record to 13-7 on the season, and their 26 points puts them third in the Tom Shaw Conference, with games in hand.

The Trappers will be given a rematch as they face the Flames this Friday night, Nov. 28, at Cam Neely Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
