Whitecaps win a thriller to reach MLS conference final for 1st time

Whitecaps FC know they’ll be playing for the MLS Cup Western Conference championship this Saturday night (Nov. 29), just not sure whether in Vancouver or San Diego.

The Whitecaps won a shootout thriller over rival Los Angeles FC on Saturday (Nov. 22) at BC Place for their first ever trip to the soccer league’s conference final.

Close to 54,000 fans saw the home team cruise to a 2-0 lead at halftime, only to have LAFC score twice in the second half — including a laser of a free kick by Son Heung-Min, delighting proud Koreans in the stadium — to tie the match and send it to 30 minutes of extra time.

Emmanuel Sabbi scored first for Vancouver in the 39th minute, followed by Mathías Laborda in the 45th, making for a festive atmosphere in the packed stadium.

Down to eight players in the overtime frame, the Jesper Sørensen-coached Whitecaps barely held on to force a shootout and eventually net four penalty kicks to L.A.’s three, for a 3-2 final score.

The West final is set for Saturday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. (Pacific time) against the winner of San Diego FC and Minnesota United FC, who play Monday night on Apple TV. If Minnesota wins, Saturday’s game will be played in Vancouver, but San Diego will host if victorious.

The winner of the West final will move on to the MLS Cup championship game Saturday, Dec. 6, hosted by the team that finished with more points during the regular season.

Tickets for a potential Western Conference Final at BC Place went on sale Sunday (Nov. 23) at 10 a.m. on whitecapsfc.com/tickets and ticketmaster.ca/whitecaps.
