Missing contractor’s body recovered after search in East Kootenay coal mine

A 39-year-old resident of Hosmer, B.C., is confirmed dead at a coal mine in southeastern B.C.

Early Thursday morning, Nov. 20, Elk Valley Regional RCMP were made aware of a mining incident at the Elk View Operations in Sparwood, RCMP said in a release. It was reported that the man had been reported missing on site and that the Elk Valley Resource (EVR) Mine Rescue teams were leading a search of the mine property involved in the incident.

“RCMP assisted with the initial investigation and remained in contact with our EVR liaison contacts during the search,” the release said.

“As of this morning [Friday, Nov. 21], Elk Valley RCMP can confirm that a contractor working on site has died and his remains have been recovered,” RCMP said. “The BC Coroner’s Office is currently on scene along with the RCMP. “Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of this person. This is an incredibly difficult time for our Elkview Operations workforce, and we are ensuring support services and counselling are available.”

“Regulatory agencies and authorities have been notified, and we are undertaking a full investigation into the incident. Next of Kin notification was completed by RCMP officers this morning with EVR management in support. Elk Valley Regional RCMP offer their sincere condolences to the family, friends and fellow co-workers of the deceased.”
