Blackwell nets winner as visiting Stars dump Vancouver Canucks 4-2

Colin Blackwell’s goal midway through the third period stood up as the winner, lifting the visiting Dallas Stars to a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Thursday at Rogers Arena.

Mavrik Bourque, Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen also scored for Dallas (13-5-3), with Jake Oettinger making 33 saves for the goaltending win. Linus Karlsson and forward Elias Pettersson replied for Vancouver (9-11-2). Kevin Lankinen took the loss in net, stopping 20 of 24 shots.

Dallas opened the scoring just 55 seconds in. Lankinen robbed Bourque on a 2-on-1, but the puck came loose on the other side of the net and Bourque slipped it home. Three of his last four goals have come against Vancouver.

The Canucks pulled even at 3:06, when the right-handed Karlsson moved down his off wing and beat Oettinger.

Robertson restored the Dallas lead at 7:44, spinning and snapping his 12th of the year over the shoulder of Lankinen. Robertson has nine goals in his last six games and a seven-game point streak against the Canucks.

Pettersson was credited with his seventh of the season on the power play at 14:25, with both he and Jake DeBrusk furiously poking at a loose puck in front of Oettinger.

The second period was less eventful, as neither team could find the mark, even though the Canucks had three power-play opportunities. Shots on goal after 40 minutes favoured the Canucks, 25-14.

Robertson had a chance in the crease with a wide-open net seven minutes into the third period, but it was knocked away by Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek.

With 9:13 to play Blackwell got behind the Canucks defence and slipped a shot past Lankinen to give the Stars a 3-2 lead.

Rantanen added an insurance marker with 91 seconds to play, spinning around forward Brock Boeser and backhanding a shot past Lankinen to make it 4-2. Rantanen has 18 goals in 23 career games versus the Canucks.

The Canucks return to action Sunday, when they host the Calgary Flames (6 p.m.).

NOTES: The Canucks went 1-for-5 on the power play (they had 11 shots in their first four man-advantage chances), while the Stars were 0-for-2… Vancouver had a season-high 72 shot attempts… Pettersson and DeBrusk had six shots apiece… Vancouver’s Tyler Myers led all players with five hits.
