Spike belt used to stop B.C. driver clocked doing nearly 200 km/h

West Vancouver police are recommending charges for a driver they say fled from an officer and was clocked at excessive speeds before eventually being stopped by a spike belt on the way to Squamish last month.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Oct. 30, West Vancouver police recorded a 2005 white Chrysler 300C travelling westbound on Highway 1 at 194 kilometres an hour.

A police officer activated his lights and sirens and tried to pull the car over, but the driver fled and continued northbound on Highway 99 towards Squamish, West Vancouver police said in a media release Tuesday.

Due to high speeds and public safety concerns, police say the officer didn’t follow and alerted BC Highway Patrol and Squamish RCMP.

The white Chrysler was soon seen speeding through Porteau Cove. BC Highway Patrol tried to intercept the vehicle, but the driver again failed to stop for police. In a co-ordinated response, officers deployed a spike belt roughly one kilometre north of Porteau Cove, stopping the Chrysler.

The driver was arrested for dangerous operation of a vehicle and flight from police. The driver was issued an immediate 24-hour driving ban after being testing for alcohol consumption, police said.

West Vancouver police say they will be recommending two charges of flight from police and one charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle under the criminal code. The driver was also issued a 10-month roadside driving prohibition by Roadsafety BC.

“This driver’s conduct displayed a blatant disregard for public safety. West Vancouver police will continue to work in co-ordination with Squamish RCMP and the BC Highway Patrol to get these drivers off the road and hold them accountable,” said Suzanne Birch, spokesperson for the West Vancouver Police Department.

West Vancouver police are asking anyone with relevant dashcam footage or other information to phone 604-925-7300 and quote file #25-11296.
