Ridge Meadows RCMP catch two for excessive speeding

Ridge Meadows RCMP caught two drivers for excessive speeding and impounded their vehicles during recent enforcement.

The Road Safety Target Team was doing traffic enforcement work in targeted locations across the community, and caught one driver doing 158 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, and another doing 141 in a 80 km zone.

In B.C., excessive speeding is defined as driving 40 km/h over the posted speed limit, and brings a fine of $368 minimum. However, travelling at 60 km/h over the limit – as these drivers were – can result in a fine of $483.

Both drivers were issued Tier 2 Excessive Speed violation tickets for $368, had their vehicles impounded, and could possibly face further driving penalties as a result, said the RCMP.

The impoundment period is seven days for a first offender, and subsequent impoundments would be 30 or 60 days. To get their vehicles back, the owners must pay towing and storage fees.

Officers also wrote eight violation tickets for a variety of insurance and driver’s licence infractions, using Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology.

As part of our ongoing pedestrian safety initiative, officers also conducted patrols in select locations. Seven violation tickets and a number of warnings were issued to drivers and pedestrians in parts of Silver Valley, Dewdney Trunk Road, Lougheed Highway, 132nd Street, and 224th Street, and other locations.

The Ridge Meadows Road Safety Target Team officers will continue to focus on pedestrian safety, as well as driving impairment, excessive speeding, distracted driving, and a host of other driving infractions.
