The City of Maple Ridge will once again host thousands in annual Remembrance Day ceremonies.
City hall issued a statement encouraging the community to “honour the service, courage and sacrifice of Canada’s veterans by gathering in Memorial Peace Park on Tuesday, Nov. 11, wearing a poppy, and taking the day to reflect and remember.”
The annual ceremony, hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion, Maple Ridge Branch 88, provides the community an opportunity to pay tribute to veterans, active service members, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace and freedom, said the city.
The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. with a parade through downtown, concluding at the Cenotaph in Memorial Peace Park. At 11 a.m., the official service will commence, marking the moment of silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Flags will be lowered at 11:30 a.m. as part of the ceremony.
“The Remembrance Day ceremony is a cornerstone of our community’s shared history and collective gratitude,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “We encourage everyone to take time to join us in reflection and remembrance, recognizing the bravery and sacrifices of those who have served our country.”
Poppies will be available at city facilities, with donations supporting the Legion, and can be placed at the cenotaph following the ceremony.
A road closure and detour will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to walk, carpool or use public transit to reduce congestion. Limited underground parking will be available in the Town Centre lot, with entry via Edge Street next to the ACT Arts Centre.
