B.C. ultra athlete wheeling toward world record

One discipline down on her quest for history, two more to go.

Vernon’s Shanda Hill is out of the water and ready to wheel out onto the bike course of the Taiwan Ultra Triathlon in the coastal city of Tainan, known for its temples, night markets, and rich Taiwanese culture.

The course loops around the Luermen Holy Mother Temple, a beautiful and spiritual site that will serve as both the race venue and home for the athletes throughout the event.

The 38-kilometre swim discipline took Hill slightly more than 21 hours to complete.

“She experienced some motion sickness during the swim, which slowed her down, but she stayed steady and got it done,” said her support team on social media. “She’s a bit behind schedule, but her spirits are high and she’s focused on the next stage.”

That would be an 1,800-km bike ride, followed by 422-kms of running.

Should Hill complete the first-ever Ultra event in Asia, she will become the first woman in history to finish 50 Iron distance triathlons in a single calendar year.

Hill receives sponsorship from Rancho Vignola, The Starting Block, and Evolve Wellness in her effort to establish a world record.
