Kamloops RCMP find no credible threat after school lockdown

After a Kamloops high school was placed on lockdown due to the possible threat of a person with a gun, RCMP have found no credible evidence to support the report.

Police attended NorthKam Secondary School on Thursday, Nov. 6, at about 2 p.m. following a report of a person with a gun at the school.

NorthKam and surrounding schools were locked down, however, at 3:20 p.m., the lockdown was lifted, and students were able to go home or meet with their families.

Then, just after 6 p.m., RCMP received a report that a social media post was being circulated amongst students on Snapchat in response to the lockdown earlier in the day. The post threatened students’ safety and has raised concerns in the community, stated Cpl. Brett Urano.

“The investigation is ongoing, however, police thus far have found no credible evidence to suggest there was a person with a firearm at the school on Thursday,” Urano said. “As well, the social media posts appear to be repeated from previously reported posts in September.”

Police have increased their presence around the schools in the area out of an abundance of caution, Urano explained.

Supports are being provided to students following the Nov. 6 events.
