A woodworker who specializes in building clocks, cutting boards and pepper mills is going to be a special guest at this year’s Whonnock Weavers and Spinners Guild Annual Exhibit and Sale.
John Lougheed’s work will be on for sale at the guild’s 44th annual juried show, along with a wide range of handmade fibre articles including: handwoven scarves, shawls and clothing, tea towels and blankets, hand knitted items, fibre for spinning and skeins of hand spun yarn, baskets, and needle felted treasures.
“I been interested in woodworking since my high school days. But since retirement I’ve truly had time to enjoy this hobby,” explained Lougheed.
“I’ve built everything from a cutting table for my wife’s quilting projects, to various furniture pieces. For the upcoming Whonnock Weavers and Spinners sale I’m building clocks, cutting boards, coasters and pepper mills, and some wood artistry,” the artist said.
This year there will be some unique framed tapestry art pieces as well as some beautiful hand beaded jewelry, noted guild member Gloria Stanley.
In addition, there will be three invited guest artists selling work: potter Brigitta Schneiter, iron worker Dave Rutledge, and another woodworker Scott Constable.
Schneiter was born in Switzerland, but has called Maple Ridge home since 1977. The artist creates decorative art in clay, using both hand building and wheel throwing techniques.
While incorporating themes from nature, Schneiter creates unique and enchanting vessels, vases, birdbaths, mushrooms, distinct cups, bowls, jugs, and kitchen accessories.
Rutledge is a hobby blacksmith who really likes banging on steel to create different things.
Constable relaxes in his workshop where he makes beautiful bowls, kitchen utensils, and birdhouses.
This year mark’s the guild’s 50th anniversary. There are currently 45 members, most of whom will have work in the show.
Guild members will also be demonstrating fibre techniques during the show.
All guests can enter a draw to win one of three gift baskets filled with items made by guild members.
The 44th annual exhibit and sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, at Whonnock Lake Centre, 27871 113 Ave., Maple Ridge.
