Inmate assaulted at Agassiz-area prison

An inmate at a maximum-security institution in Agassiz has been hospitalized following an assault incident on Monday, Nov. 3.

According to a statement from Correctional Service Canada (CSC), a single assailant allegedly attacked a fellow inmate at Kent Institution. Staff members evaluated the victim and transported him to outside hospital for treatment.

The Agassiz RCMP and CSC are investigating the incident. The assailant has been identified and the CSC said action has been taken. No other staff members or inmates were injured during the incident.

“The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” the CSC stated. “In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.”
