‘You can never defeat golf’: B.C. pro tees off for 365 days in a row

Eva Kovacs stepped off the facility at Cedar Hill Golf Course on Oct. 31 knowing she had done what few golfers ever attempt: she had played golf every single day for an entire year.

What started as a simple effort to sharpen her swing on Nov. 1, 2024 became a 365-day journey built on the simple love for the game.

“I wanted to get better,” Kovacs told Saanich News. “If you’re going to be a golf pro, the rationale should be that you want to improve your game. So that’s what I did.”

Kovacs, who first picked up a club at 24, has spent decades around the game, from managing private clubs in Toronto to teaching across Ontario, before moving to the Island three years ago. A chance reconnection with longtime friend and colleague Laird White, now the director of golf at Cedar Hill, brought them back together at the Saanich course she now calls home.

“I met Eva more than 20 years ago when she was running a sports dome in Toronto,” White said. “We’ve been friends and colleagues ever since, and to see her do this, golf every day for a year, is just remarkable. Her perseverance is second to nobody.”

What began as a goal to “own her swing” quickly became a daily ritual.

Kovacs averaged at least an hour a day on the course or practice range, sometimes more.

Whether it was a quick bucket of balls before lessons or a full round with friends, she never missed a day, not for wind, rain, or even sleet.

“There’s no excuse not to,” said the 72-year-old. “If it’s raining or sleeting sideways, the range is still open. You just have to make the effort. And around here, you always get that little bit of sun that peeks out, it’s Victoria.”

This summer, her hard work paid off.

Kovacs shot her age three times and recorded a career-best 66, a round she still calls “magical.”

“I was just playing with a few ladies in our Tuesday group, minding my own business, and everything clicked,” she said. “When I added up the score, I couldn’t believe it.”

White remembers the moment clearly.

“She came up to me and said, ‘Can you please add this up? I think it’s 66, but I can’t even believe it,’” he said with a laugh. “Her short game completely transformed this year. She’s one of the best putters on the property.”

For Kovacs, the streak wasn’t just about golf, it was about learning consistency and compassion for herself.

“You’re going to have bad days,” she said. “But you learn from the bad days. You keep plowing on. Be kind to yourself, there’s always tomorrow. You’re not dealing with sickness or something dire, you’re out here playing. You can socialize, be with friends, and enjoy what the game gives you.”

Even with 365 days completed, Kovacs says she has no plans to take tomorrow off.

“I’m not stopping,” she said. “It’s just part of my life now

White said her dedication has made an impression across the Cedar Hill community.

“Eva brings so much energy and inspiration to the course,” he said. “She reminds all of us what commitment really looks like.”

And for Kovacs, the game remains undefeated, and that’s the point.

“You can never defeat golf,” she said, smiling. “But you can keep getting better, and that’s the fun of it.”
