Chilliwack RCMP officer in hospital following head-on crash

A Chilliwack RCMP officer was still in hospital on Monday, following a head-on collision early Sunday morning.

The crash took place at about 1:10 a.m. Nov. 2, on Vedder Road just north of Stevenson Road.

Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill of the Chilliwack RCMP said the officer was driving north in a fully-marked 2021 Ford Explorer when a 2006 Lincoln Zyphry driving south crossed into the northbound lanes and collided with the police vehicle.

The road remained closed for about eight hours, and both vehicles sustained heavy damage. One of the vehicles ended up on the grass beside the Vedder Pointe shopping centre.

“Witness statements taken at the scene suggest that speed and erratic driving by the Lincoln driver were contributing factors,” Mulvihill said. “Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor in the collision.”

While the officer was still in hospital on Monday, Mulvihill said she was in stable condition. The driver of the Lincoln, a 29-year-old man from Chilliwack, was treated for minor injuries and released.

No charges have been laid as of Monday, and the crash is still under investigation.
