The new Pitt Meadows Secondary School facility is expected to be open for the September 2029/30 school year.
An updated timeline and draft designs of the replacement project were revealed Wednesday evening, Oct. 29, at an open house that attracted 169 people who wanted to get a glimpse of the new renderings of the building.
It was also an opportunity to ask members of the project team, including Public Architects, questions about the project and learn how ideas and feedback shared by community members during the 2023 consultation process helped shape the designs.
The new school will have the capacity for 1,100 students, the same as the current facility.
It will be three storeys tall, which information put out by SD42 says, will preserve outdoor space for sports fields, play areas, and community use – and will meet the current seismic and structural standards for public safety.
The building will be set back from property lines to minimize shadow impacts on neighbouring buildings. This will also reduce excavation noise and disruption during construction.
Three storeys will also allow for improved site efficiency with safer pedestrian routes and organized drop-off and pick-up zones.
Once the design and development phase is complete, around April 2026, the project will be put out to tender and a successful bidder will be chosen. This process is expected to take place between May and July next year.
Construction is expected to begin in August 2026 and finish in June 2029.
The old school will be demolished and a new parking lot and playfield will be built, which is expected to take place between June 2029 and June 2030.
Those who were unable to attend the open house but want to share their reflections are invited to participate in a short online survey, open until Thursday, Nov. 6 at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JKH9QXC.
