As ongoing physician shortages continue to plague northwest B.C. communities, Prince Rupert is now dealing with yet another shortage at its hospital, leaving the city without a crucial service.
For the past 20 years, Dr. Philip Nel has been the general surgeon at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital. Nel announced his retirement early in October, and Northern Health is looking to fill this critical gap in surgical services.
“Northern Health is actively recruiting for a general surgeon in Prince Rupert and working with interested candidates to fill the vacancy,” Northern Health stated. “Dr. Philip Nel has been a valued member of the medical staff, and we are grateful for his years of dedicated service.”
Northern Health added that recruitment is already underway, with active postings for a permanent general surgeon on its website, as well as on the HealthMatch BC and the Canadian Association of General Surgeons websites.
Recruitment through the Rural Specialist Locum Program for locum general surgery specialists is also ongoing to replace the city’s longtime surgeon.
“While recruitment continues, general surgery patients in the region are supported by surgical services at Ksyen Regional Hospital in Terrace, and through local visiting clinics,” Northern Health stated.
