Officer swerves to avoid being hit by alleged impaired driver in Maple Ridge

A police officer in a marked vehicle had to swerve to avoid an allegedly impaired driver Saturday evening.

The officer was driving west along 112 Avenue and as they were passing 243 Street, a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed was driving east in the westbound lane, causing the officer swerve to avoid being hit.

An emergency traffic stop took place and, Ridge Meadows RCMP say, the driver exhibited obvious signs of impairment.

A search of the vehicle revealed multiple open bottles of liquor.

The 18-year-old driver was arrested and had their license seized and vehicle impounded, said police.

Multiple violation tickets were also issued along with a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP).

This incident marked a busy weekend for the RCMP.

Some of the other calls they received included: disturbances, domestic incidents, check-well-beings, missing persons, assaults, and an assortment of property crimes.

In addition, there were fireworks-related calls as well as individuals found breaching their conditions and having outstanding warrants.

Police also conducted proactive traffic patrols aimed at speeding, impaired driving, and pedestrian safety – which resulted in officers issuing 10 violation tickets for no insurance in one shift.
