Monday morning brought not one, but two shootings in Abbotsford, with the most recent one occurring just before noon in the 33200 block of George Ferguson Way.
Abbotsford Police Department media relations officer Sgt. Paul Walker said that officers were called to this area of central Abbotsford at approximately 11:45 a.m. for reports of a shooting.
Officers found a 41-year-old man who had appeared to be suffering from a serious gunshot wound.
An air ambulance was called in to transport the man to the hospital, while officers arrested a second man who is believed to be a suspect in the incident.
“At this time, this incident is being treated as targeted and is not believed to be connected to the ongoing extortion-related investigations or the earlier homicide on Ridgeview Drive,” said Walker.
Police are asking for any witnesses who were in the area of George Ferguson Way between Fuller Street and Ware Street around the time of the shooting to contact the department at 604-859-5225.
This is the second shooting to occur in Abbotsford today, with a fatal one taking place on Ridgeview Drive at 9:22 a.m.
There was also another one that happened in the early hours of Saturday morning at Clearbrook Road and Downes Road, which sent one individual to the hospital with minor injuries.
Combined with these earlier incidents, Abbotsford has now experienced three shootings in less than three days.
This comes at a time when the area had actually been experiencing a decline in homicides, with 2024 bringing a five-year low of 1.8 homicides per 100,000 people in the Abbotsford-Mission region, according to Statistics Canada.
