Surrey’s Khaira re-signs with Abby Canucks ahead of banner-raising

Surrey-raised Jujhar Khaira has re-signed with Abbotsford Canucks following 24 playoff games with the Calder Cup-winning club last spring.

Khaira, 31, returns with a one-year deal to provide veteran leadership for the AHL team.

GM Ryan Johnson announced the move Thursday (Oct. 23), a day before the Canucks’ Friday home-opener vs. Ontario Reign and banner-raising at Abbotsford Centre.

There are a lot of new faces on the Manny Malhotra-coached Canucks roster this season as a number of players have moved up to play in Vancouver, while others have moved on to other pro teams.

The six-foot-five Khaira, traded to Abby from Syracuse on March 8 in exchange for future considerations, returns after scoring three goals and adding six assists in the 2025 playoffs, adding 31 penalty minutes.

A centre, Khaira was drafted in 2012 by Edmonton Oilers in round three, 63rd overall. He has since played for several AHL teams and also 337 games in the NHL with Edmonton, Chicago and Minnesota.

This week, Abbotsford Canucks play several games on home ice including Friday and Sunday (Oct. 24, 26) vs. Ontario, then Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 28-29) vs. Calgary Wranglers.
