Several ferry sailings cancelled between Island and mainland due to rough seas

UPDATE: Improved conditions have prompted B.C. Ferries to resume service on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route as of noon, and the Duke Point-Tsawwassen route as of 3:15 p.m.

PREVIOUSLY POSTED: BC Ferries has had to cancel numerous round trips between Vancouver Island and Tsawwassen today due to rough seas.

According to a service notice from the ferry corporation, four sailings on the Nanaimo-Tsawwassen route and six sailings on the Victoria-Tsawwassen route are cancelled Friday, Oct. 24, “as a result of Environment Canada’s severe weather forecast for high winds in the Strait of Georgia.”

The 10:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. sailings from Duke Point and the 10:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. sailings from Tsawwassen are cancelled.

The 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. sailings from Swartz Bay and the 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. sailings from Tsawwassen are cancelled.

Customers with reservations are being contacted by BC Ferries’ customer service centre to arrange re-scheduling or refunds.

“We know you have important places to be. We are currently monitoring the weather conditions with the goal of getting you underway as soon as it’s safe to do so,” the service notice stated. “If conditions do not improve, additional sailings may need to be cancelled and we will let you know if that happens.”
