The City of Maple Ridge is warning the public about heavy rains and potential flooding.
A storm system will impact the Lower Mainland from early Thursday, Oct. 23 through to Saturday, bringing heavy rainfall. Precipitation amounts are forecast between 50 to 130-plus millimetres. The public is asked to monitor local media and forecasts for further updates and in case more weather alerts are issued.
Runoff from rainfall is expected to lead to high streamflow in local rivers from Thursday through to the weekend. Significant flooding is not anticipated, however localized flooding, rising river levels, washouts and hazardous driving conditions are possible.
A high streamflow advisory has been issued by the B.C. River Forecast Centre for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. City crews are inspecting, and preparing city infrastructure like drainage systems, culverts and pump stations, monitoring conditions closely, and are ready to respond as needed.
The public is advised to:
• Clear leaves and debris from gutters and catch basins near your home to prevent localized flooding.
• If your property is prone to flooding, prepare sandbags or other flood mitigation measures to protect your property.
• Pre-register for Provincial Emergency Support Services at: ess.gov.bc.ca
• Take some time to review your home emergency plan and supplies.
• Have a plan to stay with friends or family outside known floodplains in case of evacuation.
• Check in with neighbours or vulnerable residents to ensure they are aware of the hazards.
• Do not walk, cycle, or drive through flooded areas.
• Stay clear of fast-flowing rivers, creeks, and potentially unstable riverbanks.
• Keep children close and keep pets on leash, as they may not recognise the danger.
• Check on neighbours or vulnerable residents who may need assistance.
