Maple Ridge Community Foundation has made a sizeable donation to a memorial scholarship in honour of a popular principal and teacher.
Last week Kevin Nosworthy, president of the foundation, presented Dr. Marla Connor with a cheque for $21,500.
The money will be put into the Trevor Connor Memorial Scholarship and Bursary, supporting local graduating students.
Connor retired from a 33 year career in education in 2021, after his final post as principal at Maple Ridge Secondary. He passed away in 2024.
The scholarship and bursary are both valued at $1,000 each and is presented to the recipient at their graduation ceremony.
According to his daughter Sydney Kern, the scholarship and bursary were created by their family to honour the qualities they admired in her father and to support the kind of students Connor deeply cared about.
The scholarship is given to a student who will be attending a recognized post-secondary institution to become a teacher or professional dedicated to working with children, a person who has a reputation for helping others and the community, has overcome an obstacle or challenge, and who is a servant hearted leader.
The bursary is given to a servant hearted leader, who has overcome an obstacle or challenge, who has a reputation for helping others in the community, and for whom financial need would be a factor.
